La semana pasada el Castillo de Edimburgo fue descubierto y visitado sin ningún coste y por todo el público que quiso, debido a las celebraciones del patrón de la ciudad, San Andrew.

Last week the Edinburgh Castle was discovered and visited for free by the general public who wanted, because of the St Andrew's celebrations.

Stonehaven War Memorial, Scotland

Monumento erguido para recordar a las víctimas locales durante la I y II Guerra Mundial. Es visible desde bastantes zonas debido a su posición en un altiplano al sur de Stonehaven, Escocia.

Monument built to remember local victims during World War I and II. It is visible from many areas due its position on a south high land near Stonehaven, Scotland.

Ganado escocés de los Highlands / Scottish Highlands cattle

Originaria de las tierras altas de Escocia aunque en las últimas décadas ha sido exportada a otros países, se caracteriza por su amplia cornamenta, espeso pelaje y su resistencia a las adversas condiciones meteorológicas. Su carne tiende a ser tierna y de gran sabor pero también de alto valor comercial.

Native of the Scottish Highlands although in the last decades has been exported to other countries over the world, is characterized because of its wide horns, long coats and resistance to adverse weather conditions. Its meat tends to be tender and great taste but with high commercial value as well.

St George's Free Church tower, Edinburgh

También conocida como St Andrew's Free Church o Stockbridge Church, fue planificada a mediados del s: XIX por Frederick Thomas Pilkingtony y terminada antes de 1870 con la construcción de la torre.
Frederick Thomas, reconocido arquitecto escocés, proyectó otras 12 iglesias en Edinburgo así como varios edifícios de culto en Escocia

Also known as St Andrew's Free Church or Church Stockbridge, was planned in the mid-s: XIX by Frederick Thomas Pilkingtony and completed by 1870 with the construction of the tower.
Frederick Thomas, renowned Scottish architect, designed another 12 churches in Edinburgh city and several buildings around Scotland.

Foca común / Common Seal, Edinburgh

La foca común o foca de puerto (Phoca Vitulina), es uno de los mamíferos más grandes que se pueden ver en UK. Son muy curiosos y no dejan de zambullirse y bucear en busca de peces. Se ha calculado una población mundial de 5 millones de ejemplares repartidos por todos los mares del hemisferio norte. Su hermana la foca gris (Halichoerus Grypus), tiene el 40% de su población viviendo alrededor de UK y Irlanda, son más grandes pudiendo pesar 300kg.

The common seal or harbor seal (Phoca Vitulina), is one of the largest mammals that can be seen in UK. They are very curious and are constantly diving, looking for fish. It has been estimated a global population of 5 million, distributed over all the seas of the northern hemisphere. Its sister, the grey seal (Halichoerus Grypus), has 40% of its population living around UK and Ireland, they are larger and can weigh 300kg.

Granton harbour, Edinburgh

El puerto de Granton, anexo a la ciudad de Edimburgo se construyó con fines mercantiles a mediados de s: XIX en unas tierras pertenecientes al quinto Duque de Buccleuch. Como dato curioso, la Reina Victoria lo visitó en su primera visita oficial a Escocia. Hoy en día se utiliza como puerto deportivo y de recreo. 

Granton harbour is annexed to Edinburgh city and was built for commercial purposes in the mid-s: XIX on lands belonging to the fifth Duke of Buccleuch. As a curiosity, the Queen Victoria visited it in his first official visit to Scotland. Nowadays it is used as a recreational harbour.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012 (1)

Fringe Festival de Edimburgo, como cada año, tiene lugar la primera semana de agosto y durante tres semanas se puede ver todo tipo de espectáculos que incluyen arte, danza, comedia, cabaret, música, teatro o exposiciones. Es considerado uno de los mayores festivales de arte en el mundo con miles de espectáculos en más de 250 diferentes lugares de la ciudad.

Sin embargo, el Fringe no es el festival oficial. El Festival Internacional de Edimburgo (que se empieza una semana después que el Fringe y tiene una duración de tres semanas), es el festival oficial y muestra actuaciones de primer nivel en áreas como música, teatro, ópera, danza, talleres...

Fringe Festival, Edinburgh, as every year, takes place the first week of August and during three weeks we can see all kinds of shows including art, dance, comedy, cabaret, music, theatre or exhibitions. Is considerate one of the largest arts festivals in the world with thousands of spectacles in more than 250 different venues across the city.

However, the Fringe is not the official festival. The Edinburgh International Festival (which starts a week after the Fringe and lasts three weeks), is the official festival and it shows first class performances in areas such as music, theater, opera, dance, workshops...

The Red Arrows over Edinburgh, Scotland

The Red Arrows sobrevolaron los cielos de Edimburgo dejando tras ellos los tres colores nacionales para celebrar el comienzo de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.

The Red Arrows flew over the skies of Edinburgh leaving behind them the three national colors to celebrate the beginning of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Highland Games 2012, Inveraray, Scotland

Celebrados el 17 de Julio en Inveraray, al oeste de Escocia, estos juegos de las tierras altas (Highland Games) agruparon centenares de personas que, durante todo el día pudieron divertirse viendo las distintas competiciones y actuaciones de los grupos de danza y música tradicional.

La prueba más importante fue el lanzamiento de tronco, (Caber World Championship), es reconocida a nivel mundial y consiste en el lanzamiento de un tronco de madera de unos 5 metros y 36/60Kg de peso, dando un giro en el aire de 180 º longitudinalmente.

Were held on July 17 in Inveraray, west of Scotland, these Highland Games gathered hundreds of people, all day you could have fun watching the various competitions and performances by dance groups and traditional music.

The most important competition was 'the launch of tree trunk' (Caber World Championship), is recognized worldwide and consist in launching a tree trunk about 5 meters tall and between 36/60Kg, turning 180º in the air.

Otro de los atractivos consistió en lanzar un peso de 25Kg a unos 4 metros de altura.

Los Jardines Botánicos de Edimburgo fueron establecidos en 1670 y actualmente se encuentran distribuidos en 4 zonas, que son Argyll, Stranraer, Scottish Borders y Edimburgo capital.
Ésta último espacio tiene una superficie de 28 hectáreas, está a 15 minutos del centro de la ciudad y la aportación por visitante es voluntaria.

Edinburgh Botanic Gardens were established in 1670 and are currently divided into four areas,  Argyll, Stranraer, Borders and Edinburgh Scottish capital. This last area has ​​28 hectares, is located15 minutes from city center and the contribution per visitor is voluntary.

Esta estructura se encuentra a pocas millas de Edimburgo y con ella los barcos superan el desnivel de 24 metros que existe entre los canales Forth and Clyde Canal y Union Canal. Se inauguró en 2002 con la presencia de la Reina de Inglaterra y actualmente es el único ascensor rotatorio para embarcaciones del mundo. Pese a su gran estructura, tarda 5 minutos en bajar/subir los barcos utilizando 22000kw de potencia.

This structure is located few miles from Edinburgh and boats can sail through Canal Forth and Clyde and Union Canal because of its 24 meters lift. It was opened in 2002 with the presence of the Queen of England and is currently the only rotary boat lift in the world. Despite its large structure, takes 5 minutes to lift boats, with a total power of 22000kw.
